General Information

Q. When is the 2017 Des Moines Women’s Half Marathon, 5K and Team Relay?

A. The gun goes off for the Half Marathon and the Team Relay at 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. for the 5K on May 7th.

Q. Can I get a refund or transfer my registration to a friend?

A. Unfortunately we do not offer refunds or transfers but if you’re unable to toe the line you can still collect your swag and free glass of wine.

Q. What is included with my race entry?

A. Your race entry includes the following:

- Connection to an incredible and healthy Girl Gang

- A special edition quarter zip (half marathon/ relay) or technical tee (5K)

- A post-race celebration glass of Jasper Winery wine and food

- A special edition DSMWHM engraved wine glass or headband (for those under 21)

- A fully supported race course with hydration, fuel and entertainment

- Official race timing (with course splits for 1/2 marathon)

Q. Is there a charity connected to the Des Moines Women’s Half Marathon, 5K and Team Relay?

A. Yes!  We’re proud to partner with the Girls on the Run of Greater Des Moines. We have 20 free registration slots available for those who would like to run for a greater good as part of GOTR's SoleMates Program. More information can be found "here." 

Q. What is the Team Relay? 

A. Everything is more fun as a team.  We’ve split the half-marathon into 3 sections so that you and your closest friends can conquer 13.1 miles without having to run each step yourself.  Each relay exchange zone is approximately 4.25-4.5 miles apart. Athletes register as a team and then as members 1, 2 + 3.  The relay exchange zones have music, other team members to socialize with and each team goes home with the half marathon swag, a DSMWHM baton and 3 medals.

Q. Am I able to switch from the half marathon to the 5K? 

Of course! Just let us know when you pick up your packet and we'll make the change. We will still give you the half marathon swag that you signed up for. 

Q. What if a relay member is unable to attend, can we replace them?

We do allow relay members to be replaced in the event that one is unable to attend. The new relay member must come to packet pick-up on Saturday, May 6th and fill out a new form. We will not charge for this change. Note: We cannot change the original shirt size for the new relay member as we are sold out.

Q. What will the temperature in Des Moines be on May 7th?

A. The historic average for Des Moines, Iowa on May 7th is a high of 70 degrees and a low of 49 degrees.  But, this is Iowa so pack layers if you are traveling.

Q. Where is parking?

A. Parking is located at 1700 Gray’s Lake Drive, Des Moines.  It is a 5 minute walk from the start/finish line and will allow you to get in/out as the event takes place.  Please note that Fleur Drive north-bound traffic will be closed from 7:45 a.m.-8:15 a.m.  

Q. What streets will be impacted and what times?

A. The only road closures lasting more than 30 minutes will occur on East bound MLK drive from Fluer to SE 4th and George Flagg Parkway from Park Rd to SW 30th St.  

Q. Will the race take place rain or shine?

A. Pack your ponchos!  Rain or shine the event will happen.  If there is unsafe weather we will work with the Des Moines police to monitor the situation and keep you informed.  We most definitely want to ensure each athlete gets to experience the DSMWHM but we will make sure that the safety of the athletes, volunteers, staff and city officials is the number one priority.

Q. We'd like to host a training group at our running store, who can we contact?

A. We're looking to identify a running store or club in as many communities as possible to host trainings for women leading to race day. We will provide your store with extra incentives to help make athletes in your area who register aware of your training team. To participate reach out to

Q. Who is producing this event?

A. RipRoar Events is a Des Moines based event production company. We carefully choose events that are empowering and impactful on our community and strive to produce events at the absolute highest level. Other events we produce include: The Des Moines Turkey Trot, Glow With The Flow Yoga and the RipRoar Youth Triathlon Series


 Q. Where do I pick up my race packet?

A. You can pick up your packet anytime between 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Jasper Winery (2400 George Flagg Pkwy, Des Moines, IA 50321) on Saturday, May 6th or from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 a.m. on race morning.  We strongly encourage you to pick up your packet on Saturday so you won’t have to fight crowds and to enjoy less stress on race morning. 

Q. What do I bring with me to packet pick-up?

A. Bring your ID and your smiling face.  If you are picking up packets for people other than yourselves you’ll also need to bring the proxy form found "here."

Q. Can I pick up packets for others?

A. Yes!  Just bring a copy of their ID and a signed proxy form from each person. Proxy Form can be found "here."


 Q. What type of support will be on the race course?

A. You will be running on either clearly marked closed roads or trails for the entirety of each distance.  There will be 2 hydration aid stations on the 5K course and 9 hydration/fuel aid stations on the half-marathon course.  The fuel stations will include fruit and other snacks and will be located at approximately miles 3, 4, 9.5 and 11 of the half marathon and team relay courses.

Q. Do you have a recommendation for where spectators should go?

Q. Are there awards for top finishers?

A. You bet.  Awards will be 5 deep in each female age division for the 1/2 marathon and to the top 5 overall in the 5k.

There will not be any awards for men or relays including men. 

 Q. How will timing work for this event?

A. In your packet you will find a timing chip.  All distances, including each member of the relay teams, will receive timing.  Splits will be at approximately mile 4 and 9 for the half marathon and team relay.  

Q. Is there a gear check on race day?

A. Absolutely! There will be a gear check area so you can drop off your long sleeve shirts, water bottles and other materials you will want following the race.  We do not recommend checking phones or wallets.

Q. Can I run with my 4-legged friend?

A. Unfortunately, our insurance policy only allows service dogs.  But if your posse wants to bring your 4-legged friend to the post-race entertainment we’re ok with that—just remember to clean up after them!

Q. Can I wear headphones?

A. Yes!  But we’re going to pack the course with DJ’s, bands and inspirational women so keeping your headphones in will take away from some of the true DSMWHM experience.

Q. Can I walk?

A. Yes!  Our motto is just put one foot in front of the other.  The cut-off will be 4.5 hours for the half marathon and team relay so as long as you can keep a 20 minute pace the course is all yours!

Q. Will there be restrooms on the course?

A. There will be a restroom located at each aid station.  

Q. Where are good spots for my family members to cheer me on?

A. A cheer station map will be published closer to race day.


 Q.  What happens after I conquer my running goal?

A. Imagine a lawn party with your closest friends and family—but we’ll take care of the planning.  The post-race celebration is a time to kick off your running shoes and let us pamper you.  Our post-race party will take place on the Jasper Winery lawn and will include music, wine, food, massages, yoga and plenty of inspiration.  Your entire posse is invited to the post-race celebration but only those with bibs will be pampered with the food and massages.  We will have food and refreshments for purchase for all.

 Q. I deserve a glass of wine—how do I get that?

A. All registered athletes will receive a free glass of wine at the post-race celebration.  Remember to bring your ID and there will be a pull tab on your bib valid for one free glass of wine.  There will be wine for purchase if you want more than one glass or your posse that came to cheer you on would like to join you for a toast. 

 Q. What time does the post-race celebration take place?

A. We will be pampering you on the Jasper Winery lawn from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Q. What should I bring?

A. – lawn chair, blanket, ID, cash (if you have others with you that might be hungry and aren’t registered or you want an additional alcoholic drink), phone—because you will definitely want to Snapchat your friends that foolishly chose to stay home, layers—it’s Iowa.
